Tell us how he/she is making a difference:
JulieMarie has served on the Aurora Public Schools Board of Education since 2009, and as president since 2012. Together with her colleagues on the board, JulieMarie has worked to support students and staff, engage parents and families, build a strong working relationship with the superintendent, and foster meaningful community partnerships. She led the search for a new superintendent and recently helped to create a unified job statement that outlines the board's duties. While many neighboring school districts responded to budget challenges by letting teachers or staff members go or making drastic programmatic cuts, JulieMarie was proud to be able to pass budgets with her fellow board members that maintained people and programs. During the past four years, the board worked to keep teachers and staff in the district and avoided a reduction in force. The board was also able to maintain key programs including the arts, music and PE (necessary components to educating the whole child), for which they're to be congratulated. She was a school board member who was among those elected to serve on the Council of Urban Board of Education (CUBE)'s 16 member steering committee.
