About NomineeNominee's Organization The Academy of Saint Matthias the Apostle Nominators affiliation to nominee: Principal Tell us how he/she is making a difference: Mary Sykes plays an influential role in all she does at Saint Matthias. Mary is the lead on our middle school team, runs our student council and is in charge of all our 8th grade events.
Mrs. Sykes showcases her caring nature with her students every day. She is driven to help them find success, including working with them during her breaks and showing. She strives to bring her students to the highest level of success possible. Her math class, especially, is interactive and fun. She makes algebra an exciting adventure, where the prize is finding the correct answer.
As a sponsor of extracurricular activities, something she does of her own time and resources, Mary has facilitated student planning of fundraisers, dress-down days, field trips and school dances. The hours of planning show her dedication, but her patience in guiding students to actually create and implement their ideas shows her desire to have students learn in ALL they do!
Mary, most importantly, is a model of positive discipline and is constantly a positive person. Research continues to show that punitive punishments do not work. Mary works tirelessly to create an environment where logical consequences are the norm. This year, she has moved into the additional role of vice principal, which has only showcased her level-headed decision making and powerful leadership.
