 About NomineeNominee's Organization Lisa Nielsen Nominators affiliation to nominee: Colleague Tell us how he/she is making a difference: Lisa Nielsen thinks in very liberated and liberating ways about education. She pushes the envelope in the area of reinventing what schooling means, what the objectives should be and how do it. Outspoken and courageous, she has taken many bold and controversial positions based on her belief that educators and education must be reinvented to be relevant in a brave new, technology-driven world.
Lisa is a strong collaborator and works with many groups to help move education reform forward. It's hard not to be impressed by the extent to which Lisa will go to push others forward, to empower and support the people she believes are on the right track. Her passion, energy and bias for action puts her in the league of proactive bloggers/commentators who go beyond writing and speaking about education reform to actually organizing and acting to advance the reforms she believes are critical to the field of education. Thoughtful, way out of the box thinker, more than and idea person...a "doer."

The most notable thing about Lisa is her fearlessness and willingness to bite the hand that feeds her whenever she feels a bite is deserved. Though employed by the NYC Department of Education she remains one of its most vocal critics. But the NYCDOE is far from alone in feeling Lisa's sword, she cuts wide swaths through corporate takeovers disguised as education reform, obfuscatory lingo, and policies that are less than stellar. When not slaying dragons, Lisa is a mentor to teachers trying to integrate technology into their backward schools, a supporter of parents, students and teachers who are trying to reverse the rush toward more and more standardized testing.

I consider myself lucky that she found my school's facebook page and decided to contact me. Lisa's wealth of knowledge and her understanding of the importance of technology in our schools is unsurpassed. It is a privilege to be able to work with such an innovative educator who works hard every day to help us all be the best we can be. Lisa deserves this honor and I am so happy that everyone will get to know the person I can now call my friend and colleague!

About the NomineeBrief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee? Lisa pushes educators to think of possibilities. I have not always agreed with her but she has never shied away from conversation and always listened to my countering view. Our dialogue has always been valuable in helping to further my own thinking. I have also collaborated with her on social media training materials for the NYCDOE. She is at the forefront of social media for instructional purposes and is creating a valuable path for the NYC DOE follow.

About the NomineeBrief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee? Lisa never fails to spark conversations about the crucial topics in education. Personally, her desire to create a quiz for teens to take regarding their digital footprint sparked wonderful conversations with my students when she allowed them to provide feedback on the quiz draft. Every student thought deeply about their digital footprint. They also offered feedback on the quiz; Lisa incorporated their suggestions, and my students felt honored that they were heard. Her enthusiasm for education is infectious.
