What people are saying...
"I know it does, indeed, take the entire village to raise a child. When the entire community is engaged as the educational community, amazing learning and student achievement takes place. In a time when American education is constantly under fire, recognizing excellence is critical. We need to embrace every opportunity we have to inform the public sentiment about what is good in education today. Abraham Lincoln said, “ Public sentiment is everything. With public sentiment, nothing can fail; without it nothing can succeed.” I am sure the Academy of Arts and Sciences, with cross-discipline recognition of excellence in the Bammy Awards, will be informing the public sentiment."
Ken Griffith President of the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP)

About the Nominee
Brief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee?
The most notable thing about Lisa is her fearlessness and willingness to bite the hand that feeds her whenever she feels a bite is deserved. Though employed by the NYC Department of Education she remains one of its most vocal critics. But the NYCDOE is far from alone in feeling Lisa's sword, she cuts wide swaths through corporate takeovers disguised as education reform, obfuscatory lingo, and policies that are less than stellar. When not slaying dragons, Lisa is a mentor to teachers trying to integrate technology into their backward schools, a supporter of parents, students and teachers who are trying to reverse the rush toward more and more standardized testing.

Shelly is a marvel, an energetic, seemingly always smiling, sprite who carries a world of knowledge, enthusiasm, warmth and experience with her wherever she goes and she goes all over the world training teachers and students on how to use technology to add depth and breadth to their learning. She is one of the founders of EdChat, ELTChat, and also hosts weekly webinars aimed at people who teach English to non-English-speaking students. She appears in so many places, 140 conferences, roundtables, UNESCO events, and her blog - Teacher ReBoot Camp seemingly simultaneously. Wherever she travels she shares the experience and her own learning with her huge PLN on Twitter and Facebook.

If ever there were a lifetime achievement category of the Bammy Awards, Jerry would win it hands-down. He is amazing. After a lengthy career of innovative teaching to some of the hardest to teach students in some of NYC's most dangerous neighborhoods, Jerry "retires" to a second career of being a reliable, prolific and responsive resource for teachers, students and parents. His website is a marvel of organization, completeness (though he always seems to be adding even more pages of resources) and occasionally eye-straining color choices. I make a sport of mentioning obscure topics knowing that as soon as Jerry hears it he will create a new page of quickly researched resources regarding that topic. Amazing.

Lisa is an inquisitive school board member working hard to keep student needs front and center in her district. The most striking thing about Lisa is her ability to admit she doesn't know enough about a topic and her tenacious work to learn what she doesn't know. She asks good questions, listens to the answers and then asks more questions, the mark of a life-long learner.
