Tell us how he/she is making a difference:
Meghan is the Education Coordinator at the Environmental Nature Center (ENC), where she teaches science and social science programs to students in Kindergarten through 7th grade, and mentors students in 7th through 12th grade as they perform service learning projects at the Center.

Meghan always goes above and beyond my expectations – she does what she’s supposed to do really well, then she does more than she has to do, and does that well too! Meghan is an excellent educator. She is knowledgeable about her subject matter, and her teaching techniques encourage learning. She is constantly seeking additional knowledge and developing herself professionally.

Meghan contributes to the field of environmental education by exploring creative and fun ways to improve our teaching methods at the Center. She is passionate about teaching and about what she is teaching, and her passion spills over into her students and into her co-workers. Her students become enthusiastic about learning and her positive influence encourages her co-workers to excel as well. Meghan has high expectations for herself AND for her staff, but she has already established a work environment that encourages high employee performance. Since Meghan has taken on the role of Education Coordinator, the Naturalists have come together more cohesively as a team then they ever have before.

Meghan brings a wealth of experience to teaching children and leading Naturalists at the Center. Prior to working at the ENC, Meghan studied aboriginal culture and Tasmanian old growth forests in Australia and dolphins and colobus monkeys in Africa. She taught Introductory Ecology to first year college students. In Kenya she taught Environmental Conservation, English, AIDS Awareness and Computer Literacy classes to local children and adults. She developed her skills as an outdoor educator at Pathfinder Ranch where she worked in several capacities, including introducing inner city youth to the wonders of natural world.

Meghan believes that the highest quality of education that one can receive is “learning by doing.” Throughout her career she has taught many children and adults how to step out of their normal comfort zone to experience new things, leading them to an appreciation of Nature and their connection to it. She’s been a positive role model to her students, her staff and to me. Meghan is always very positive, and I know that her positivity, productivity and initiative is rubbing off on the rest of the ENC staff. She is the epitome of the phrase “lead by example” – I can already see myself improving at work because of her. It is a pleasure working with Meghan; she is one of the highlights of working at the ENC.
