The team of educators who founded and host #Edchats on Twitter have started a phenomenon that has spread like a virus. Twitter chats are now being used by various educators for professional development. Those who may question whether professional development for educators can be done in 140 character chunks need only "lurk" on a few of the weekly hour-long chats to be quickly disabused of this notion. In just a few sessions, one quickly discovers the enthusiasm that participants have for this channel of communication and the real relationships and real mentoring that are going on virtually. Indeed, many participants indicate that these chats are preferred to more traditional face-to-face teacher support systems. But in the end, the evidence that #Edchat is a true innovation in the field is the number of niche chats it has spawned.
