About NomineeNominees' website: http://schools.nyc.gov/AboutUs/leadership/PEP/members/PatrickSullivan.htm Nominee's Organization New York City Panel for Education Policy Nominators affiliation to nominee: admirer Tell us how he/she is making a difference: Patrick Sullivan has served on the Panel for Educational Policy, New York City's Board of Education, since his appointment by the Manhattan Borough President in June, 2007. In that capacity, he has been a tireless advocate for students, parents and the general public, combing through voluminous contracts, school closing submissions, and other complex documents so that, where needed, he could challenge proposals that would otherwise be rubber-stamped by the mayorally-controlled Board. He is the president of the board of directors of Class Size Matters, the non-profit advocacy organization.

About the NomineeBrief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee? School board members sometimes need to be lone voices, speaking truth even when the Board majority -- particularly a majority appointed by the Mayor -- cedes its public responsibility to the mayorally-appointed Chancellor. So, whether you agree with him or not, Patrick Sullivan's outspoken work questioning school closings, no-bid contracts, and charter co-locations has been courageous, thoughtful, and a needed check on otherwise unbridled power.

About the NomineeBrief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee? There are very few school board members who are not in the pocket of those trying to privatize public schools. Patrick stands with community voices and not the rule of the mayor. He bravely fights to improve our schools while the mayor seeks to close as many schools as possible down--even schools that are making tremendous gains.
