Tell us how he/she is making a difference: Sally Doulton is actively making a difference in her school each and every day. From the educators she helps to train and mentor, to the students who rely on her guidance, enthusiasm, and support.
It’s almost impossible to put into words the energy, enthusiasm, and passion that Sally puts into her classroom. Sally has the unique job of teaching Scholastic’s reading intervention programs, READ 180 and System 44, both designed for students who are reading below grade level. Sally’s classroom is comprised of a very challenging student population. This includes students in Special Education; English Language Learners who have just arrived in the United States; and students who are economically disadvantaged. However, with each personal and academic obstacle that these students face, Sally is the one constant in their lives. She has created a safe, comfortable environment in her classroom where her students feel successful and strive for excellence.
While there are so many examples of how Sally is making a difference, my last visit to Manhasset Middle School is what has left a lasting impression on me and speaks volumes of Sally as an educator. In 2010, Daniel* entered Sally’s class as an English Language Learner and could not speak a word of English. He was placed in regular 7th grade classes, with ESL support. He was unable to connect or communicate, and was far behind his classmates academically. It only took a few weeks before Sally’s reading class became a safe place for Daniel, and although he still struggled in school he began to break out of his shell, interacting with his classmates and participating in class. What continues to amaze teachers the most is despite Daniel’s struggles at home and with learning English, he still manages to come to school every day. Daniel’s hard work has certainly paid off—he entered Sally’s classroom with a Lexile of 32, and today, he has improved to a 1026L. His success has spilled over to his other content-area classes where he now earns A’s and B’s.
Daniel’s success would not have been possible without Sally’s passion, and her constant support. In my recent visit to Manhasset, Sally held a special celebration to recognize Daniel’s success. He was honored in front of his peers, and for the first time received a cake with his name on it. His classmates shared in the excitement, slapping him on the back and congratulating him. For Daniel, this was a life changing event, one he will remember forever—and he is just one of the students in Sally Doulton’s class.

About the NomineeBrief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee? • Sally is a role Model for her colleagues, opening her classroom to other teachers so they can come in and see READ 180 and System 44 in action.
• She hosted an evening READ 180 Open House for students and parents. It was well-attended and informative. Sally’s students attended and walked her students through the READ 180 instructional model.
• Sally addressed parents of students with disabilities at one of their monthly meetings regarding System 44 and READ 180 programs. This presentation was featured in the local newspaper, Manhasset Press.
• Sally served as a member of the Scholastic System 44 Advisory Board in New York City, where she provided Scholastic with best teaching practices, recommendations, and program feedback. These conversations informed Scholastic’s development team of important program enhancements that later led to the release of System 44 Next Generation.

• Sally was recommended by Scholastic to participate in NBC’s Education Nation 2012 Teacher Town Hall with Brian Williams. As an audience member, Sally stood up in front of the entire country and articulated her goal to open her classroom to parents so they could engage in reading and writing in the evening. With this vision of change, Sally believes that by helping parents become fluent readers we are in turn helping their children become fluent, therefore affecting future generations of learners (to view Sally on Education Nation, please visit: nbcnews.to/YCeoKF — Timestamp: 45:45).
• Sally invited special guest author, Madaline Herlong, to speak about her latest book Buddy. In preparation for Madaline Herlong’s visit, Sally’s students created presentations ranging from Hurricane Katrina pet rescue, to the history of New Orleans, to baking Pralines. Sally’s classroom event became a community affair with parents, local politicians, and school personnel attending.
• In 2012, Sally was nominated by a colleague for the Scholastic Outstanding Educator Award. Sally’s nomination included student testimonials which expressed how Sally was outstanding in their minds:
• “I am actually going into mainstream English class next year. I couldn’t have done it without Mrs. Doulton.”
•“Not only does Mrs. Doulton care about our reading, but she cares about us as people. I wish I could have Mrs. Doulton as my teacher every year because she has opened so many doors for me.”
