Tell us how he/she is making a difference:
Kathy is the school nurse at the Francis A Desmares Elementary School in Flemington, NJ (Flemington Raritan School District). Kathy is a true champion for wellness for the students, families and staff in the community that her school serves. It all started in 2005 when their district did the CDC School Health Index and they developed the Flemington-Raritan Wellness Policy with a particular focus on school nutrition. Kathy has a passion for gardening and through careful research and obtaining a state wellness grant in 2009, she was able to oversee the building of a school garden which has been operating over the past few years. She has a set of volunteer wellness champions, mostly parent volunteers, who help maintain the garden. Teachers and Students also plant and work in the garden. Students and staff have received specialized nutrition lessons including cooking lessons with a chef. In addition, the students have incorporated the produce from the garden into their school lunches and have created healthy recipes learning to enjoy a variety of vegetables they may never have eaten before. Kathy and her school garden were just featured in the May issue of Parents Magazine. http://www.parents.com/recipes/nutrition/school-gardens/
Kathy works tirelessly to foster good nutrition within the district and is currently paving the way to improve the school lunch menu. Her school just received the USDA Bronze Award for Nutrition. She has done several professional workshops and presentations about school gardens and has a collaborative relationship with the Rutgers Cooperative Extension.
She cares for a large number of Hispanic and low income students and has made such a different in the quality of their nutrition and others in the school community.
Kathy was also honored last year at the National Association of School Nurses Annual Conference in San Francisco with a Johnson and Johnson Health Leadership Award.

About the Nominee

Brief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee?
Its not easy to buy healthy fresh fruits and vegetables in some of lower income areas. By teaching how to "grow your own" and showing kids teh benefits and eating right Kathy is instilling lifelong, life-changing lessons not just to the students, but to whole families as well!!!!

About the Nominee

Brief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee?
Kathy has forged many relationships with community partners and her school parents in her quest for wellness. She serves on the Hunterdon County Partnership for Health, Latino Access to Healthcare, Latino Health Literacy and the Overweight/Obesity Action Teams. She helped to develop a Diabetes Type II Parent screening tool for students with elevated BMIs. In order to better provide needed goods and services for our district underserved families, she formed a team of district parent volunteers to reexamine the problem and entered in to a partnership with the United Way which has enabled us to reach more families with school supplies, internet access, and Holiday gifts. Kathy has trained some of her school parents to be Wellness Champions to teach nutrition lessons in the classroom. In order to build and sustain her garden, she has raised over $20,000 through grants and in kind donations. Kathy is co-chair of our district Wellness Committee which has been actively planning to repeat the CDC School Health Index in the fall of 2013.

About the Nominee

Brief Comments - What other facts should we know about your nominee?
Kathy is an inspiration for all school nurses who have a passion for gardening. The health and wellness connection of active movement to plant the garden (exercise) to finally harvesting and preparing the nutritional crops is an exciting project for all to learn about.
