Dr.Yvette Jackson Academy NomineeAbout NomineeName of Nominee: Nominees' website: Nominee's Organization National Urban Alliance Nominators affiliation to nominee: Professional, heard her speak at a workshop Reason for Nominating: Dr. Yvette Jackson’s research on empowering students of color is relevant and needed. She is internationally recognized for measuring and evaluating the learning potential of disenfranchised students. The achievement gap is underscored by a confidence gap which seems to be influenced by misperceptions and expectations. Dr. Jackson’s work on literacy, gifted education, and cognitive mediation underscores the need for mentors and for the reframing of labels for low achieving students. Based on the theories developed by Dr. Reuven Feuerstein, her work helps school districts develop curriculum and strategies that integrate cultures, language, and cognition to support learning and achievement of under-performing students. . About the NomineeComments - NOTE: You and your comment may be selected for the awards presentation. What would you say briefly? Dr Jackson has been an inspiration in the area of enabling all students to achieve the optimal potential and recognizing the gifts each has. I worked with her at Arlington High School in Indianapolis during the NUA initiative. She was fantastic. Just what the staff needed to work with their inner city youth who had so much to offer but had such a hard time making certain that their potential was developed. In my opinion, you already have the most important award, the heart felt thanks of thousands of students you have helped by supporting powerful education for all.
